The international, multi-disciplinary youth festival BREAKIN'WALLS (under 27) offers up-to-date, (inter)national and innovative theatre, dance, performance & mime productions, along with music, bands, debate, film, installations and late nights for a young crowd. All productions within the festival are co-selected by a panel of enthusiastic, critical young people aged 16 to 23 years, with differing levels of education and culturally diverse backgrounds (the youthpanel).
Breakin'Walls is a fixed part of the Frascati theatre, and is produced in-house each year. This festival is the benchmark for our youth output throughout the year. The festival took place for the first time in 2001, and has since proven to be an exceptional formula for a youthfestival: for young people by young people. Breakin'Walls is now a label; a recurring event in Amsterdam whereby theatre-makers, young people, schools and art academies jointly pursue the interests of youth culture, participation by young people in arts & culture and the development of talent.
From this year's festival and into the future, the festival will be taking another step forward, by increasing links to Frascati's regular programme. Breakin'Walls is Frascati's youthful, audacious, hip younger brother! Therefore from theatreseason 2009-2010 there will be a WINTER and SPRING edition of the festival in November 2010 and April 2011 and various sideshows during the year.
Within Breakin'Walls, Frascati also initiates confrontations between artists closely related to our house and young talent from the city. Meetings between different generations, diverse cultures and different artistic disciplines.
Breakin'Walls Festival consists of the following elements:
- Productions from the Netherlands and abroad: A diverse, multi-disciplinary programme, compiled by the artistic coordinator of the festival in close cooperation with the youth panel.
- Cooperation between young people and professionals: Own projects whereby young talent is put in touch with experienced professionals. All of these productions are produced within our own production house: Frascati Producties.
- Educational projects for schools: An educational programme in cooperation with a company from Frascati's regular programme, whereby pupils from various Amsterdam schools play an active role. A visit to various productions within the festival is part of the programme.
- The peripheral programme: A programme in which the annual theme is fleshed out in the form of installations, films, exhibitions, workshops and debates. The annual theme is not limited to plastic and artistic expression, but the festival also seeks the social framework outside of its own boundaries. Corresponding to the journalistic interests of many young people, the theme will also be elaborated upon in the form of a social youth debate.
Breakin'Walls WINTER takes place from Wed 17 through Sat 20 November 2010 in Frascati and the Brakke Grond, Amsterdam. The festival spin-off Breakin'Walls SPRING will take place from Thu 14 through Sat 16 April 2011 in the form of a mini-festival. During the year there will be various Breakin'Wals Sideshows in addition to our regular programme.
